This Google Earth image shows Le Rocheux mine area. Only traces remain of the original iron mines. The mines experienced a decline in production through the years, but in 1857-1880 realized an upsurge of production for its iron and iron pyrites, calamine (zinc compounds), and galena (lead ores). The pyrite (iron sulfide) was shipped to Lille for sulfuric acid production. The rich vein ran north-side for a length of 3000 meters and east-west for a width of 100-150 meters wide. Other areas in Belgium where Lamy (and later Crookes) found thallium include Namur and Philippeville. Image, courtesy, GoogleTM Earth; to be used exclusively for non-commercial purposes.
